Security Query-Based Systems (Sec-QBS)

Sec-QBS investigates how to use insights from edge sensing and analytics while preserving privacy.

Connected sensors, with the ability of collecting data, will drive the new wave of big data.  The spread of sensing creates opportunities for understanding, problem-solving, and safeguarding.  It can also be used for unjustified surveillance and can affect privacy and power relations.  The collection and use of this data and its potential for good must be balanced against privacy risks.

Query-based systems allow analysts to request information from a sensitive database remotely. However, these systems often focus on two access approaches. The first approach focuses on formal guarantees, which result in restricted interfaces providing limited utility. The second approach focuses on single-layered approaches as required, resulting in catastrophic data breaches when vulnerabilities are discovered. The project aims to bridges the two approaches.
