Article by Dr Irina Brass featured in Digital Forensics Magazine

Dr Irina Brass, Co-Investigator of the Standards, Governance and Policy Stream of the PETRAS IoT Hub, has published an article for issue 35 of the Digital Forensics Magazine.

The article investigates the latest trends in standardising IoT security for complex cyber-physical systems and its challenges for digital forensics. The article is based on a presentation that Dr Irina Brass has given at the Forensics Europe Expo which took place between 5-8 March 2018, as part of the Intelligence and Investigations for the Internet of Things Seminar sponsored by the Digital Forensics Magazine.

At the seminar, the PETRAS Hub was represented by Dr Irina Brass (Department of Science, Technology, Engineering and Public Policy, UCL) and Professor Tim Watson (WMG Cyber Security Centre, Warwick University).

A key message from the article is how fragmentation of the standards landscape for IoT security raises several challenges for digital forensics experts, especially when it comes to the identification, collection, analysis and preservation of evidence in dynamic and interdependent environments such as complex cyber-physical systems.

An excerpt taken from the article states “The standards landscape for IoT security is developing rapidly, leading to increased fragmentation. Achieving alignment across these standards is a difficult, if not impossible, task. However, at a minimum level, more can be done to develop and harmonise standards that map and model vulnerabilities at the intersection of security and safety, and that develop classifications of risk in cyber-physical systems. This also offers an opportunity to inform, review and update established guidelines for the identification, collection and analysis of digital evidence in complex cyber-physical systems”.
