Spotlight On: Matthew Bradbury

L I M

What is your role and what does it involve?
I am a postdoctoral researcher at the Cyber Security Centre in WMG at the University of Warwick. My role involves a wide range of actives from developing novel privacy and security techniques for vehicles, investigating how existing techniques interact, and managing aspects of the IoT-TRaM project.

How long have you been with PETRAS and what was your previous role?
I have been working on PETRAS for the past 6 months, previously I was doing my PhD in the Department of Computer Science at Warwick. Where I investigated providing Source Location Privacy for Wireless Sensor Networks.

Tell us about a project you are working on now which is top of your to-do list?
I am currently working on IoT-TRaM which involves demonstrating four existing academic innovations that provide security and privacy for connected vehicles. These innovations have already been extensively tested with simulations, but have yet to be tested on hardware in real world environments. Currently I am engaging with multiple autonomous vehicle testbeds around the UK to find out their capabilities and the protocols to perform testing at their sites. I am also working with four other postdoctoral researchers who are implementing these innovations on real world hardware.

What about the IoT attracted you to working in this area?
I am interested in the provision of context privacy, which encompasses information such as time, location, and identity. It is different to protecting the context of messages via encryption. Context privacy is often challenging to protect in stationary IoT networks, and is even more so when mobility is considered. However, developing techniques to protect privacy is very important to provide assurances to the users of these IoT devices.

What is your favourite album, film and novel?
Album: Deja Entendu by Brand New
Film: Contact
Novel: Lord of the Silver Bow by David Gemmell

Who would be your dream dinner guests?
My grandparents, I think all four would have interesting stories to tell.

What advice would you give your younger self?
Trust your instincts.

What would it surprise people to know about you?
I have completed the 14 peaks challenge (over the course of a week instead of the 24 hours). It was incredibly fun, especially with the flooding, snow, and wind that joined me on a few of the walks.
